From the Hamilton
Times, May 11, 1915 :
“Evidently some of
the residents of this city have not awakened to the fact that the soldiers’
rifles were made for killing real live human beings, and not any kind of animal
which they wish to get rid of.
“This morning, Major
Ashton, who was out with the sentries on Robert street, going to relieve the
watch, was accosted by a woman, who ran across the street, and, in a loud
voice, asked, ‘Are you busy?’
“He was somewhat
dumbfounded, not knowing what the woman wanted, and replied that the men were
just going on duty. She then asked if one of them could spare a minute to go
and shoot a neighbor’s cat, which was showing too much affection for her
chickens.
“Needless to say, the
request was refused, much to the disgust of the lady.
“It was not a German
cat.”1
