When it comes to
signs on major roads, Hamilton was getting the respect it deserved, even on a traffic
sign within the city limits.
In October 1914, a
prominent local municipal politician brought his concern about that state of
affairs to the Hamilton Spectator:
“That the members of the
Automobile club have been lax in duty in posting of sign routes for the
guidance of auto drivers is the opinion of Controller Jutten.
“ ‘Out at the corner
of Garth and King streets,’ said the controller this morning, ‘signs are placed
indicating the way to Toronto, London and Brantfrd, but not one of them has a
word to indicate the direction into Hamilton.
“ ‘ It may be that
those responsible for the posting of these guide-boards considered that the
drivers could easily determine the direction into downtown Hamilton, or it may
be that Toronto, London and Brantford interests have predominated. In any case,
I think Hamilton should be included in these sign-boards, and the city should
see to it that it is done at once.’ ” 1
