1914-10-20

It was a large advertisement carried in all three Hamilton newspapers late in October 1914.

Something different for Hamiltonians in terms of restaurant dining was about to open on the south side of King street west, between James and Macnab streets.

The ad began with large block letters which announced “Hamilton’s Newest Restaurant : Something Entirely New in the Style of Restaurants for the City of Hamilton.”

The rest of the large ad, which had no illustrations, and only a leafy border, read as follows :

In the new GRANGE CAFÉ, 25-27 KING STREET WEST, which is opening FOR INSPECTION ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23RD, AND FOR BUSINESS ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24TH , SOMETHING NEW is BEING PRESENTED to HAMILTONIANS.

Messrs. WONG & COMPANY, proprietors of this business, have determined to reproduce here the best features of the famous Chicago Chinese European Restaurants. A personal inspection of these handsome premises will quickly bring the conviction that they have probably outdone even those which they have determined to equal.  Nothing more ornamental or on a better scale all though is to be found in any city on the continent.

Every convenience is promised, and among the features of this restaurant will be a

          SPECIAL BUSINESS MEN’S LUNCH

From eleven to two-thirty. Supper from 5:30 to 8 each day, and particular attention will be given to ORDERS FOR THE SERVICE OF THEATER PARTIES. The A LA CARTE MENU for meals is most extensive, and is composed of the best known and most popular dishes to be found in the leading cafes.”

The New Grange Café would become an instant popular destination for restaurant goers in 1914, and would remain as popular for the next half century.
